But one critical question remains: how do we ensure these investments work together to deliver better care for the people who need it most?

Too often, promising interventions operate in isolation. Community health programmes may remain disconnected from primary healthcare facilities, digital solutions can become standalone platforms, and successful pilots may struggle to transition into sustainable, government-owned systems. Financing can also remain tied to individual projects rather than the long-term systems required to connect patients, providers, communities and health information across the continuum of care.

At ILF 2026, the session “The Future of Care Investment: Community, Primary Care and Digital Health Integration” brought together leaders from EHA Clinics, VillageReach, Preston Associates International Development and Allô Docteur to confront this challenge. The conversation made a compelling case for moving beyond fragmented investments towards connected, people-centred systems of care—where communities, frontline health services, digital infrastructure, health workers, data and financing reinforce one another rather than operate as separate interventions.

The discussion also challenged stakeholders to rethink what successful health investment should look like. Success cannot be measured only by the number of facilities built, technologies deployed or projects completed. Ultimately, investment must translate into measurable improvements in people’s lives: better access to care, stronger continuity of services, improved quality and fewer preventable illnesses and deaths.

Now, the conversation moves from principle to practice.
